Berber women summary

Berber women are fascinating people who have an interesting life. Everything about them is worth preserving : their daily life, clothing, jewelry and finally their marriages.

A berber women's daily life is very busy and demands a lot of work. It isn't like most women's usual daily life , and that is one thing that shows that they are important people. Like other women they have to take care of their children and cook for their families. But unlike most, besides the chores they have to do at home, they have to either work in fields, granaries or orchards.

Almost all berber women wear the same types of clothing. During the day they would either wear a colorful skirt with a shirt or a kaftan. Women also wear scarves over their heads. It is nice that most wear the kaftan, because it is like a tradition that everyone follows. Kaftans are also very nice outfits that have beautiful beaded patterns in them.

Berber women have a very unique way of wearing their jewelry. They have plenty of jewelry that wear worn for different occasions and by different types of people. The Hand of Fatima is a common jewelry that many people know about. It was worn for luck by many women but the women that were wealthy wore it with a sliver one. However a village women who carries a heavy load of firewood would wear silver chain with old coins . A women that works in a factory would wear rings, bracelets and earrings.

Marriage in the berber culture happens differently. Most of the time it is the family that arranges the marriages. The age limits for a bride to be when she get married is 16 but the brides are usually 14 or 15 when they get married. However, the men are usually way older then they are. After the marriage the new married couple usually moves in a lot with the family of the men.

In conclusion, even though the berbers have a very different life style, I still believe that it is important to preserve there culture, simply because their believes and traditions are also used by other people that are not berber, and so that proves that they are an important culture.

  11. Why do Berber women have so much jewelry for different occasions?

I agree with you that we should keep Berber culture because other people also use it even though they aren't Berber themselves. I also think that it is really interesting to see what a big job women play in a Berber family. They have to take care of the children, household and all the other responsibilities they have.

  12. Your presentation taught me new things about berbers and I liked the pictures you found of Berber Women. I agree that Berber Women are very important to the berber culture but what if they stop putting henna and wearing caftans? I think it wouldn't change anything because Moroccans are still wearing Caftans and is now being International.

Why do Berber women always stay in the village and not go find work in big cities like Casablanca or Rabat?

  14. Your presentation was useful. Now I know that berber women have a very hard life compared to other womens. They are unique in many criterias such as clothing, cooking, wedding and others. I think it is a good think to keep this culture because it is a part of the culture. How they live and the way their families are. The women's life depend on where they live. For example in Rabat there is technology which help them wash cloth or cook.

How is a berber woman important for her family?

  18. Q: Why do you think Berber woman usually follow their families religions and traditions?

I think that women usually follow their families religions and traditions because that was what they were taught to do and that is probably the only traditions and religion that they know. I also think that the reason they follow those traditions is because it makes them feel at home because that is how they grew up.

  19. Q: What happens if a woman doesn't do her job?

Well, sure a women can not do her job in the farm. She could just stay a home and do her chores, but I think that there would be a time where she is going to be sick of the house and be wanting to go out and work in farms or something. Another job that a women has is to raise their children and that isn't really a job that she can avoid or not do, I mean I a sure that she wants her children to be well raised and to know and respect the religion and the traditions.

  20. Q: Why is that the men go get money while the women stay home, do chores, tend fields, and take care of children?

It is the men who go get the money and not the women because the jobs that earns more money is the jobs who require a lot of hard work, and the women are not qualified for this type of job. Women are not as strong as men and so that is why there are jobs that women are supposed to do and jobs for men.

  21. Q: Can you please explain to me how berber women are starting to leave their villages to head for bigger cities and turn into modern western citizens?

Yes there are women that leave their villages to head for bigger cities but I don't think there are that many. The reason that some women leave the rural place is because if the go to the cities, then there are more opportunities and they would win more money and perhaps they would have a better life.
